A Brief History
Arnold is named after Bob and Bernice Arnold, who, in 1927 opened the Ebbetts Pass Inn. The inn served as a stop for people traveling along the Ebbetts Pass as well as those visiting the Calaveras Big Trees Park, located just six miles up the highway from Arnold. Tallahan’s is located in what was originally a residence built in 1932. Don Clark, the latest resident in the home, was a custom home builder in Stockton who developed the Cedar Center in the 1960s.
After the Clarks moved to their new home in 1969, this home was leased to a bookstore thus becoming the first commercial use. The next occupant was a health food restaurant named the “Natural Patch" , where the kitchen and dining room were established. Since then the building has housed a florist, a real estate office, and a lunch and dinner restaurant before Tallahan’s was established in 1990.
In 1994, Robert Conrad, a local celebrity with such acting credentials as Wild Wild West and Baa Baa Black Sheep, used the Cedar Center as a set for his High Sierra Search and Rescue series. The town center with its stage in where the Music in the Park is currently held each summer in Arnold as well as other community events.
